Ayurvedic Studies on Retinitis Pigmentosa

In a study on retinitis pigmentosa, a clinical evaluation of cases of retinitis pigmentosa (R.P.) with the management of Ayurvedic composite therapy was conducted. In open prospective study on 15 cases of R.P., having vision less than 3 ft. were accepted for the study. Two cases screened with electro-retinography (E.R.G.) & Visual Evoked Potential Studies (V.E.P.), pre & post therapy. Nine patients completed the study, of which in four cases there was a marked improvement in the visual acuity, four cases showed moderate improvement whereas one patient showed no change. The drugs used in the study were Shatavaryadi ghrita, Netryatarpaka yoga, Mahatraiphal ghrita, along with certain herbal combinations of Punarnava, Yashtimadhu, Amalaki and other herbs. Treatment was given in either form, oral a well local. Ghrita were used locally. All these preparation were prepared at center of Ayurveda and Pancha karma therapy, Eye care clinic. ?1.

STUDIES ON SPECIAL THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES

One of the Ayurvedic pancha karma therapies used in Ayurvedic ophthalmology is ‘Tarpana’ (eye is being kept in medicated ghee for a given stipulated period). A preliminary study was conducted by this author on 25 healthy volunteers to assess its safety profile. Certain parameters such as intra-ocular pressure, T.P.R. (Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration), Blood Pressure, and other common ocular symptoms and signs were observed for possible adverse effects.?? No serious adverse effect was noticed and no significant results were obtained 2.??
