Renaissance of Ayurveda Literature since its origin

It is really a blissful augury that scholar-Vaidyas of India have become conscious of the new era of Ayurvedic education that has set in.

?

They are concentrating all their intellect and industry to compose the encyclopedic treatise-form literature into a subject-wise simplified textbook to suit the present mode of education.

?

It needs a great industry and perseverance to collect all the related materials scattered in various books, their commentaries and compendiums, epitomes and abstracts, synopses and summaries and digests of abridged compilation written during the last two thousand years.

?

Ayurveda, though not very progressive during the dependent period of India, had produced scholars here and there who have kept the torch of Ayurveda knowledge burning and bright.

?

To this collection, one has often to add, useful knowledge that modern science has gained in the common and related branches of the medical science. Thus it becomes not only a laborious task but needs direct acquaintance with all these literatures as the system of introducing a detailed bibliography has not still come in vogue in Ayurvedic literature.

?

After the huge collection of varied materials, it needs a mathematical or sankhya instinct to find the lowest common measure and classily them in definite categories so that they may be fully informative, instructive and easy to grasp.

?

There are passionate controversies going on regarding the mode, method, manner and material of Ayurvedic education since long. Until the fundamental defect or deficiency of supplying the scholarly teachers and standard textbooks in educational institutions is removed, one cannot expect to cut this Gordian knot of Ayurvedic education.

?

Humans are clever beings that know how to adapt to the changing environment of time and space. That genius has given them a supreme position in the world and enabled them to make progress and utilize all the new achievement of science in the interest of themselves and humanity.

?

During the oral era of education (Vedic period), the man compiled sutra-styled encyclopedic treatises mostly in simple, rhythmic poetry. Oral transmission was the only method for education at that period and this style being convenient to memorize was accepted.

?

During the manuscript era, vaidyas tried to dilate or abridge, comment or criticize, expound or extract, as writing has been of some help to spread the knowledge and relieve the extra-ordinary burden of memorizing the totality of knowledge.

?

With the advent of printing process, vaidyas got a powerful means of expression of their thoughts, ideas and experiences to his full satisfaction. They become relieved of memorizing strain, and science has so enabled them today that they can print not only the word but record its sound rhythm, style and even passion with which it is uttered.

?

With these progressive achievements in the sphere of verbal knowledge on one side, and in the change of concept of generalization and all-round distribution of medical knowledge on the other side; it is but natural that there will arise a need for simplifying modification in the writing of medical literature so that people of various grades of intelligence may have full benefit of this knowledge.

?

A glance in the history of Ayurveda confirms this process of modulation of compilation of medical knowledge to suit the existing circumstances. Medical knowledge began with scattered references in the Vedas. Then there was compiled Ayurvedic Samhita as a comprehensive treatise on the science of life. Its said to be a systematized compilation divided in 1000 chapters. Each chapter containing 100 verses, thus making one hundred thousand verses in all.

?

The science known as Ayurveda is a branch of Atharvaveda. The self-created Brahma before creating men first formulated this science of life consisting of a hundred thousand verses and a thousand chapters.

?

Then came the creation of scientific encyclopedic treatise divided in eight branches viz., Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. This was the creator’s age. Vagbhata later on compiled a concise book taking the fundamentals of the above two books, adding the new knowledge and making the book to suit the time and to be the cream of knowledge of the disease and drugs of the whole universe. This was the transmitter’s age.

?

Then came the separate books on various branches of medicine were compiled viz Madhav-Nidan, Sharangdhar-Samhita; and the last encyclopedic book Bhav-Parkash was published in the sixteenth century. This was transmitter’s age.

?

Vagbhata, Madhava, Sharangdhara, Bhavamisra and all other authors of these periods adopt the method of collecting all the existing literature, extracting the useful parts and compiling them in a simple classified form.

?

It is a happy experience for us to note that we are passing through a period when a number of scholars in various parts of Bharat are directing all their energy, enthusiasm and industry to help the progress of Renaissance.
