In these days the usage of computers is becoming more. Constant work on computers causes the eye to work hard for keeping the images in focus. Due to their more usage, good number of people are in the hunt for medical attention for eye strain and irritation, pain in back, neck, shoulder etc... So far there is no scientific evidence that computer screens are harmful to the eyes. Nevertheless, some persons who work on computers often experience many ocular symptoms.

Ayurvedic Therapies for Computer Eye Syndrome

Ayurveda for Computer Vision Syndrome

Eye-related problems and the other symptoms, caused by prolonged computer use are called as Computer vision syndrome.

In these days the usage of computers is becoming more. Constant work on computers causes the eye to work hard for keeping the images in focus. Due to their more usage, good number of people are in the hunt for medical attention for eye strain and irritation, pain in back, neck, shoulder etc... So far there is no scientific evidence that computer screens are harmful to the eyes. Nevertheless, some persons who work on computers often experience many ocular symptoms.

Intra ocular structures like ciliary muscles, suspensory ligaments and lens are playing major role in accommodation for accurate refraction and vision. viewing the computer screen without any rest will cause derangement in the process of accommodation.

Blinking frequently will keep the conjunctiva and tear film moist, which is the most essential for healthy eyes. Lack of reduced blinking will land in dry eyes intern causing symptoms like itching, burning and foreign body sensations in the eyes.

Due to the less distance maintained between object and eyes, excessive exertion on ocular parts takes place.

Clinical Signs and Symptoms  

  • Blurred near vision
  • Due to exertion on accommodation-
    • Difficulty in focusing from close to far and far to close,
    • Pain in eyes 
  • Due to the reduction of the blinking rate-
    • Dry eyes
    • Red eyes
    • Foreign body sensation
  • Frequent headache that disappear after a period of rest

Auxiliary Clinical Symptoms like

  • Pain in neck,
  • Pain in shoulder,
  • Back pain etc...

 

Analysis

Analysis depends on

?        Ocular  problems

?        Posture of operating the computer.


Prevention and Therapies

Of ocular  problems:

  • Frequent Blinking.
  • Instillation of eye topical solutions in the form of drops (Aschyotana) from plants like triphala, shobhanjana, haridra etc?
  • In chronic conditions tarpana with triphala ghrita.
  • Lion pose (simhasana)
  • Ayurvedic eye exercises
  • Rest to the eyes.

Of posture

  • Sitting straight with the feet on the floor. It will reduce back stress.
  • Cushion for the lower back.
  • Symptomatic treatment for pain in shoulders with samshamana aushadhis.
